Abstract

Work output at heart rate equal to 170 beats/min (PWC170) was determined in 168 male and 68 female rowers subjected to a graded exercise on Concept-II rowing ergometer. The results were correlated with maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), maximal oxygen pulse (VO2/HRmax) and mean power output (Wm) in a maximal exercise simulating the 2 km distance, and with the corresponding anaerobic threshold values (W-AT, VO2-AT, VO2/HR-AT). For the first time, strong correlations between PWC 170 and Wm or W-AT were found in male and female athletes. Those correlations were higher than between Wm and aerobic capacity indices. Moreover, PWC170 significantly correlated also with VO2max, VO2/HRmax, VO2/HR-AT in men and women, and with VO2-AT in men. Taken together with the ease of determining, PWC170 can be recommended as a very useful index for assessing the rowers' performance. Verf.-Referat
