Abstract des Autors

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a cognitive-behavioral intervention package designed to enhance an athlete's performance in competitive situations. Intercollegiate studient athletes were assigned to either a treatment or wait-list control group after being matched for gender, age, collegiate athletic experience, and athletic skill level. The treatment group participated in seven weekly two-hour group sessions in which a variety of cognitive-behavioral interventions were introduced, discussed, and practiced. These subjects also completed homework assignments outside of the group sessions. Results revealed, that in comparison to the control group, the treatment group showed greater decreases in anxiety, increases in academic performance, and increases in psychological skills associated with successful athletic performance. Both the treatment and control groups showed similar improvements in athletic performance. Verf.-Referat
