Abstract des Autors

An investigation on the advisability of practicing sport by asymptomatic HIV seropositives was carried out among physicians in sports medicine. The study was performed by means of a questionnaire sent to 208 physicians of the Veneto and Toscana regions. The result shows that 74% of the physicians are in favour of a competitive sport practice of seropositives and 79.8% of a non-competitive one. Besides, 68.7% of physicians would grant seropositives the certificate of eligibility for sport. 50.4% of the interviewed think that it would be necessary to subject all the sportsmen to an HIV test to achieve the certificate of eligibility: among these physicians 79% think that an HIV test could be useful for assessing the hazard towards others, and 35% think that the sport practice could be dangerous for HIV seropositives themselves. The authors believe that even in observance of law no. 135 (subsections 3 and 5) the utilisation of an HIV test should be encouraged for all subjects at risk, and that the behaviour norms should be more popularised.
