At the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University Medical School of Pecs, Hungary, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear was diagnosed in 148 knees between 1989 and 1994. There were 40 acute and 108 chronic cases. Sport played the leading role in the etiology, 102 injuries (69%) happened during sports activity. 57 knees were treated with an operative intervention and 91 were treated conservatively. 90 knees of 89 patients were evaluated by an interview and physical examination at an average 39 months follow up period. Our results and conclusions support the data found in the literature that complete ACL tear especially in combination with meniscal tear, in a patient aiming to continue sports activity requires ACL reconstruction. In contrary, the need for ACL reconstruction in patients with low or no sports activity in questionable. Our few cases suitable for primary reinsertion of ACL tear were successful. Verf.-Referat
