Abstract des Autors

On the basis of a retrospective questionnaire among a homogeneous group of field hockey players a comparison is made of incidence rate, localisation, severity and backgrounds of injuries sustained on artificial grass versus those on natural grass. Results indicate that earlier notions regarding an increased injury risk on artificial grass, caused directly by technical characteristics of the playing surface, cannot be substantiated. The higher number of injuries on artificial grass is linked to a significant higher exposure time, especially with respect to the number of practice sessions and practice time per session. Attention is therefore given to the notion of the importance of trainers/coaches having knowledge and skill of different types, amounts and intensities of practice in relation to the occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries and the recovery needed.
