Abstract des Autors

The criteria underlying the neurological suitability of competitive sport activities contemplate a certain amount of specific constraints concerning only a limited series of pathologies: a) epilepsy; b) aftermath of closed head injuries; c) endocranial vascular malformations. A) In epilepsy, the main risk factors are the transitory, episodic loss of consciousness and of sensory-motor control which occur during a seizure attack. B) In closed head injuries the main concerns are the following: 1) constant follow-up of evalution, which allows to forestall or, at worst, to gain control over: a) any complications that might occur during more or less protracted symptom-free intervals (supra-and subdural hematomas) and b) an unfavourable evolution of the consequences of contusive-concussive lesions. 2) Avoidance of any event that might hinder rapid and complete recovery in any brain injury whatsoever. 3) The likelihood of the presence of any vascular malformation is difficult to be diagnosed when an oligosymptomatic is to be given the greatest attention when expressing any assessment of suitability. However much the latter should always reflect an overall clinical evaluation, a number of instrumental diagnostic test are to be considered advisable, and sometimes essential components of it. Among the non-invasive methods, the following are to be mentioned: CT scan and MRI for the assessment of structural aspects; ultrasound techniques, regional cerebral blood flow (RCBF) by inhaled 133-Xenon and above all, the modern computerized electro-encephalographic techniques for the assessment of functional aspect.
