Abstract des Autors

Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and Ratings of Perceived Dyspnoe (RPD) were studied during an incremental treadmill test in 93 young athletes engaged in diverse sports. Both RPE and RPD increased in parallel during the test. A high correlation was observed between RPD and ventilation (r=0.947), and between RPE on the one hand, and ventilation (r=0.958) or oxygen consumption (r=0.902) on the other. Peak values of all these variables were significantly higher in swimmers compared to gymnasts. We suggest that self-assessment of the work load perceived is partly mediated by the accompanying breathing discomfort and that "aerobic" athletes can better rate these feelings than other athletes.
