Abstract des Autors

The purpose of this study was to evaluate relationships between blood corticotropin (ACTH) and cortisol changes during exercise. The following exercises and group of subjects were investigated: cycle ergometer exercise at 85% VO2max (13 untrained subjects, 11 adult and 9 adolescent endurance athletes) or 140% VO2max (13 untrained subjects) performed till exhaustion; 2 hours of ergometer cycling at 60% VO2max (41 untrained subjects and 26 endurance athletes); endurance training sessions (6 untrained subjects) and strength training (15 untrained subjects). It was demonstrated that a fast and short-lasting ACTH increase occured at the beginning of all kinds of exercise, preceding the cortisol response. However, in several cases the cortisol response did not follow the rise in blood corticotropin level, indicating the possibility of an endogenous inhibition of the adrenocortical response.
