In the present paper we examine a group of athletes with insulin-dependent diabetes - in good metabolic control and without the typical complications of the disease - in order to evaluate their physical working capacity. The study-group consisted of 11 insulin dependent diabetic male subjects, of mean age 30.8, practising aerobic sports (football, tennis, basket) treated by subcutaneous insulin injections twice or thrice a day and instructed to check their glucose levels. The control-group consisted of 22 healthy subjects matched for sex, age and type of sport. Initially, insulin-dependent diabetic subjects underwent a diagnostic protocol including funduscopy, glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels, evaluation of plasma lipidic profile, ECG at rest, echocardiography; thereafter they performed a maximal exercise stress test on the cycle ergometer. Comparing diabetics and controls, no statistically significant differences were found in physical work capacity (Wmax and Wmax/weight) and in chronotropic and blood-pressure response to exercise. We can thus conclude that the performance of diabetic subjects is maintained if there is a good metabolic control and there are no micro- and macro-angiopathic complications detectable by means of ascertainments provided in the present legislation.
