Effect of glucose ingestion on thermoregulatory responses to intermittent exercise in man

Abstract des Autors

Eight hockey players performed two separate exercise tests consisting of three 15 min-cycling exercise bouts at an intensity of 60% VO2max separated by 10 min rest periods. Five times during the experiment the subjects drunk either glucose solution (15 g in 100 ml of light tea, Glu-test) or 100 ml of light tea without glucose (W-test). Glucose ingestion produced, as expected, an increase in blood glucose concentration during the test. In the W-test a progressive increase in rectal temperature (Tre) during the whole experimental period was observed, while in Glu-test a slight attenuation of Tre increase in the 3rd exercise bout was found. At the same time the respiratory quotient was significantly higher and a tendency towards a lower increase in HR was observed. No significant changes between tests in skin temperature (Tsk), skin humidity (Hum.sk), oxygen uptake, blood lactate concentration and hematocrit, were noted. EMG-activity recorded from two working muscles (vastus lateralis and gastrocnemius) was diminished in Glu-test, as compared with the W-test. The lower EMG-amplitude in the former may indicate reduced fatigue of these muscles under conditions of increased carbohydrate availability. In conclusion, the present work demonstrated that the beneficial effects of glucose supplementation during exercise include attenuation of the development of hyperthermia. Verf.-Referat
