Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if Type A and Type B fit and non-fit females would differ in their ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and physical fatigue during a submaximal exercise endurance test. The relationship between RPE and heart rate (HR) was also measured. Females (N = 39) were categorised as Type A or Type B by the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS). All subjects performed a progressive bicycle ergometer task with ratings of perceived exertion assessed during the last 15 seconds of each 2 minute work trial. The results indicated that Typ A women gave significantly lower RPEs during the early work stages. Type As also persisted at the task longer than Type Bs despite increasingly similar RPE scores between Type As and Type Bs at later stages of the task. When the Type As and Type Bs reported similar fatigue levels, Type As persisted at the task while Type Bs quit. The RPEs of fit and non-fit subjects were not significantly different. This result was not mediated by behaviour type. Verf.-Referat
