Abstract

Comparability of test results from measurements with isokinetic dynamometers is necessary for unequivocal interpretation of those results. If measurements are standardized, research can be done into the clinical value of isokinetics and into the possible relationship between test results and performance in functional activities. In this paper the development of a standard protocol for isokinetic knee extension and -flexion is presented. In devising the protocol, it was attempted to base decisions as much as possible on biomechanical, anatomical, physiological and psychological principles as well as relevant literature. Where no support could be found, information was used from the results of an inventory of the use of isokinetic dynamometers in the Netherlands. During a meeting with the users of isokinetic equipment in the Netherlands, consensus was reached about the protocol. Results obtained using the standard protocol can be collected and registered centrally. This makes further research of the clinical value of isokinetic dynamometry possible. Verf.-Referat
