Abstract
Each year, bicycle-related head trauma causes over 1000 deaths and 600,000 serious injuries in the United States. Although there is evidence that many of these deaths and injuries could be prevented if cyclists routinely wore protective helmets, the rate of helmet use is low, particularly among children. Efforts to increase helmet use have included general bicycle safety eductaion in schools, large scale community-wide efforts that use public service and media resources, and enactment of legal statutes requiring helmet use.
