Abstract
Boxing being a contact sport has a bad reputation among the public and part of the medical class mostly because of the injuries that may occur. The dynamics of ocular pathologies were analyzed by the authors in a survey of current literature. The problem was studied considering the Italian sanitary laws which were found to be sufficient for the primary care, that however should be integrated with even closer medical follow-ups. Furthermore the importance of the use of more specific and sophisticated ways of assessing ocular pathologies is underlined by the authors (in some patients, for example, the use of a Goldmann three-mirror-lens for the exploration of the fundus periphery is advised to treat eventual rhegmatogenous lesions). The authors emphasize the basic role of the sports physician as he is the one that has to assume the task to inform the boxer about the risks, how to avoid them and how to recognize typical symptoms of post-contusive ocular pathologies. In conclusion, only a major attention paid upon this matter by the operators in the sector and by the physicians will make boxing a safer sport. Verf.-Referat
