Abstract

This investigation examined the relationship between sex-role standards (the extent to which an individual believes that certain activities are most appropriate for males or for females) and anxiety in competitive sport situations. The concept of sex-role standard was first posited by KOGAN (1964), who demonstrated that primary school pupils viewed many school related activities as feminine. KOGANs work was later sanctioned by several researchers (STEIN and SMITHELLS, 1969; STEIN, 1971; and DWYER, 1973). Females sex-role standard has been shown to exhibit greater levels of aggression anxiety (COSENTINO and HEILBRUN, 1964). Verf.-Referat
