The effects of multiple anaerobic exercise periods on levels of lactate, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase and aspartate transaminase

Abstract

Eight moderately trained, male volunteers served as subjects in this experiment. Onehour prior to, immediately before, and immediately post-exercise, as well as one hour post exercise, blood samples were taken from the subjects after they had performed an exhaustive 60 s bout of exercise on a Repco Exertech, air braked cycle ergometer. Blood samples were analysed for blood lactate, creatine kinase (CK), aspartate transaminase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The total amount of work completed by each of the subjects as well as the peak power achieved was also obtained. Three tests were undertaken, with 1 hr between each test and subjects rested quietly between each test. Utilising the above protocol and over the period of the three anaerobic tests the levels of work completed between the three tests decreased significantly. Peak power also decreased significantly. CK, LDH, AST and blood lactate all increased significantly post initial anaerobic exercise and all decreased during the post-exercise rest period. In the following bouts of exercise these enzymes, as well as blood lactate all increased. It is felt that the measurement of a single enzyme to indicate muscle damage at this time is not warranted and that the collective measurement of enzymes LDH, CK and AST are a much better overall indicator of muscular damage at the cellular level.
