Abstract

This paper reviews the use of operant strategies in sport and exercise contexts. While there is evidence that they are effective, the field is an early stage of development. For this reason, the litearture suffers from fragmentation and from a lack of sophistication in research designs. Investigations so far have concentrated on demonstrations that existing strategies work in this area of application, rather tan on using the unique aspects of the sporting context to develop new ones. There is a lack of theory-testing and theory-testing and theory-extending research, despite the potential for innovation and development that this particular field provides. Several areas for research, which arise from the unique characteristics of the sporting context, could yield practical benefits and simultaneously reflect on questions of theoretical interest.
