Abstract

The relationship between efficacy strength and athletic performance in competitive swimmers of differential skill level was examined while controlling the potential influence of motivation. Based on pre-determined selection criteria, 84 volunteer subjects (42 female, 42 male) were assigned to one of three skill categories (low, moderate, or high). Subjects in each skill category were then randomly assigned, with gender controlled, to one of two efficacy conditions: low strength or high strength. It was hypothesized that efficacy strength would be significantly related to performance at all investigated levels of skill. It was also predicted that motivation would be positively correlated with efficacy strength. The overall implications of this study indicated that self-efficacy makes an important contribution to the performance ability of individuals of all skill levels. Efficacy also functions independent of motivation. Therefore, formalized programs designed to enhance efficacy could provide positive outcomes for all levels of sport skill development and performance. In comparison, the fluctuating relationship between efficacy strength and motivation found in this study indicates that future research is needed to clearly identify the nature of this association.
