Abstract

The mechanism of scaphoid fractures has been related to dorsiflexion of the wrist and the administration of a subsequent threshold force. Weber and Chao have reproduced this threshold force experimentally by applying forces to 95 to 100 degrees dorsiflexed wrists of cadavers. The most common naturally occurring mechanism of these fractures is falling on an outstretched hand. Clinically, this threshold force has been documented in various athletic endeavors, notably football, boxing, soccer, and basketball. We report the case of a weight lifter who presented to us for treatment of a delayed union of a scaphoid fracture (Herbert type C). To our knowledge, this is the first report of a scaphoid fracture that resulted from weightlifting. Verf.-Referat
