Abstract

The differential diagnosis of lower leg pain has seen the addition of stress fracture, medial tibial pain syndrome, and chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) as possible causes of leg pain. Of these, CECS has remained the most enigmatic of the diagnoses. The pain associated with this syndrome generally begins within 209 minutes of the onset of exercise, but more characteristically resolves on termination of exercise. Despite the interest in this syndrome, the pathophysiology of the pain accompanying exercise remains poorly understood. This article reviews the use of the phosphorus NMR spectroscopy in the diagnosis of CECS. Verf.-Referat
