Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess the changes in the activities of selected antioxidant enzymes in blood, as affected by a graded laboratory exercise performed on Monark cycloergometer till exhaustion. Twelve elite wrestlers, representing both styles, participated in the study. Blood for enzyme assays was sampled twice - before, and 5 min after terminating the exercise. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and of catalase (CAT) were determined in hemolyzed erythrocytes, that of glutathione reductase (GR) - in hemolyzed blood, and the activity of creatine kinease (CK) and the concentration of lipid superoxides - in plasma. The performed exercise resulted in significant increases of the activities of all enzymes studied and of the lipid superoxide levels. The post-exercise lipid superoxide values tended to be correlated with VO2max, but not with post-exercise CK. Verf.-Referat
