Abstract

While widely discussed for decades, it has only been approximately twenty years since sport psychology has been instituted as field of scientific inquiry (Wiggins, 1983). During this period a major question of interest has related to how can sport psychology better serve the needs of the practitioner and the participant. In an attempt to answer this question the area of applied sport psychology has attracted a considerable amount of attention recently (Fiher, 1982). The field has advanced from a few individuals doing descriptive testing or part-time consulting to a major force within the discipline of sport psychology. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly review the evolutionof applied sport psychology in North American and to provide some insight into issues that presently require debate and resultory initiative.
