Abstract
Orienting of attention was studied in 16 professional volleyball players and 16 control subjects. While maintaining fixation at the center of a visual display, subjects male key-press responses on detecting visual targets, which appeared to the left or right (horizontal meridian) and above or below (vertical meridian) of fixation. Simple reaction time was measured. On each trial the target was preceded by a cue (a central cross or a central arrow) to direct attention to one of two locations or to both. The orienting of attention was measured as a facilitation in detection RT at the cued location. The results showed that volleyball players shifted attention faster than controls along either the horizontal or the vertical meridian. Verf.-Referat
