Abstract
Research with experts and novices suggests that there are important differences in the respective knowledge bases of high-and low-skilled performers. One useful approach to investigating expert and novice knowledge structures has been to examine ways which experts and novices categorize domain-related problems (Chi, Feltovich Glaser, 1981). Sport tasks and problems, however, are by nature ill-defined, unlike problems in other more strictly intellectual activities. Until a valid range of sport problems are defined for each sport, the information categorization tasks can provide about the nature and organization of expert athletes knowledge is limited. Using structured interviewing techniques and inductive content analysis (Patton, 1980) two studies were conducted to examine how 20 expert athletes from four sports defined and classified sport task situations (STSs) perceived to make up their sport. Fifteen higher order categories reflecting commonalities and differences in athletes perceived task structure were identified. These results have implications for the development and implementation of athlete training programs, and for existing motor task taxonomies. Verf.-Referat
