Abstract

The purpose of the first experiment was to determine interactional effects between individual vs collective reards and verbal feedback on intrinsic motivation. After a first phase (N=118), 72 African handball players were asked to shoot behind a screen so that is was possible to handle their competence perceptions. Analyses of variance showed that motivational effects of monetary rewards, were stimulated by positive verbal feedback, while negative information produced decreases in motivation in all cases. Interactional effects of efficacyexpectations, choice possibilities and verbal feedback were considered in a second experiment. After a first phase (N=95), 72 French handball players achieved collective team exercises, in choice vs required and positive vs negative conditions. Analyses of variance showed that collective verbal feedback also had a strong effect: those effects were affected in the first period by efficacy expectations and choice possibilities, while increase in instrinsic motivation appeared in sole choice and positive verbal information conditions three weeks later. The predictions about some implications of Deci ryans theory (1980) were then confirmed in natural settings. The results showed also that Banduras theory (1977) allowed for the specification of the short term predictions of the cognitive evaluation theory. It was finally shown that those theories focus on different elements of a hierarchical organized system about negative feedback loops, when they are linked in a metatheory. Verf.-Referat
