Abstract

When young competitors who are unacclimated to heat play in hot humid weather, they risk being incapacitated by heat exhaustion or killed by heat stroke. At the 1988 USA Cup Youth Soccer Tournament in Blaine, Minnesota, such conditions caused 18 of approximately 4,000 players to collapse by midway through the second day of play. The tournaments medical staff promptly initiated modifications in play, including shorter playing periods, more water breaks, and unlimited player substitutions that decreased the number of heat-related injuries despite continued extreme temperatures during the rest of the tournament.
