Abstract
Ventilatory responsiveness to transient hypoxia was evaluated in a group of athletes (16 football players) and nonathletes (6 subjects). After having measured baseline ventilation breathing room air, hypoxia was rapidly induced by switching the inspirate to 100 nitrogen. Each subject took 3-6 breaths so that alveolar end-tidal O2 dropped below 60 mmHg. Ventilation was continuously measured throughout the experiment. Ventilatory response to transient hypoxia did not differ in athletes compared to nonathletes. This finding suggests that football does not induce a decreased ventilatory response to hypoxia.
