Abstract
Ski alpinism is a locomotion technique for handling snow-covered slopes of very steep gradient. The top level ski alpinist has a peak aerobic power comparable to that of alpine skiers and mountaineers but lower than that of the cross-country skiers. During ski alpine competitions, aerobic energy sources are prevalently used. The energy cost of uphill sections was found to be 8.7 J/m/kg. This value depends on the speed and slope of the terrain (respectively 1.85 m/s and 9.3), on the dynamic friction generated by the sealskins and by the overload represented by the equipment.
