Abstract

A comparative study of metabolic responses was carried out to asses the effect of training on thermoregulation in the swimmer. Nine occasional swimmers and 13 master competitors were studied during immersion in pool water at a temperature of 26-27 deg C. Metabolic rate was assessed by measuring deep temperature change at tympanum (Tty) and surface sites (Tsk), according to the formula: MR=0.0356 (Tsk-41.8) (Tty-41.0). The results of the experimental showed that immersion time was inversely correlated to body cooling time and to the increment of metabolic rate, both in occasional and professional swimmers. Training limits the loss of deep heat, thus allowing a metabolic saving and preventing the loss of ability to work which results from extreme cold. Verf.-Referat
