Abstract

Circulating levels of ACTH, cortisol and angiotensin converting enzyme (SACE), were measured in 19 athletes, 48 and 1 hour before and immediately after an international marathon (Romaratona 1988). The levels of the hormones and SACE 48 hours before the marathon were not significantly different from those observed in the control group represented by untrained normal volunteers. One hour before and even more after the marathon, indeed, ACTH, cortisol and SACE levels were higher than in control, likely due to the psychological and strenuous physical stress derived from the competition.
