Abstract
The diagnostic and therapeutic plan for spinal problems in older athletes should begin with a history and physical examination. The aggressiveness of this plan is determined by the morbidity of the patient and the severity of the problem. It is very important to accomplish the objectives of the history and physical examination which are (1) to quantify the morbidity, (2) to delineate psychosocial factors, (3) to eliminate tumors and infections, and (4) to delineate the clinical syndrome.
