Abstract
Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels appear to be a valid way of monitoring tissue inflammation and damage. In sports medicine CRP could be used to provide information on the relative intensity of exercise bouts. Whilst CRP levels will generally be increased by exercise-induced tissue damage or exercise itself, trained athletes may have a suppressed CRP response that may limit inflammation caused by repeated heavy exercise. This adaptation might retard the detrimental effects of the inflammatory defence mechanisms, but could also predispose athletes to illness or infection. Verf.-Referat
