Hand fractures are fairly common in football, though published studies on the subject are sparse. The risk of permanent functional impairment underlines the importance of knowing the specific treatment options. Most fractures are stable and can be treated with casting and splinting, but some require open reduction and internal fixation. Return-to-play recommendations depend on symptoms, the players position, the level of play, and the stability of the fracture.
