Abstract

To investigate respiratory response to incremental work in subjects of different physical fitness 11 handball players and 15 physical education students were examined. VO2max and VAT were measured or calculated during incremental test. Physiological measures: delta O2, delta CO2, VO2, VCO2, RQ, VE/VO2, VE/VCO2 were recorded during every minute at each work level. In order to calculate anaerobic peak power, power decrease and anaerobic capacity, the Wingate Anaerobic Test was performed. In summary, it can be stated that handball players, with higher VO2max but similar anaerobic capacity as physical education students, were characterized by lower values of VE/VO2 and VE/VCO2 observed during incremental test, which may point to better economy of respiration of the former.
