Abstract
We have studied the influence of physical activity on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis at rest and in different competitive situations, in a group of active, young male athletes (17 soccer players, 7 of whom professionals). Basal blood levels of LH, FSH, PRL and testosterone, LH and FSH levels after GnRH test and PRL after TRH test were measured in all subjects. Spermiograms were also evaluated in 10 athletes, 5 of whom professionals. Results of this functional exploration show that also in males physical activity has an effect on the central neurotrasmitters. These substances induce modifications on the basal and stimulated incretion of the hormones of the hypotalamic-pituitary-testicular axis. This effect is different in professional athlete who, though more accustomed to physical activity, must bear heavier psycho-physical stress than that of non professionals. However, the hormonal modifications are transient and do not affect the reproductive system, as it occurs in women. Verf.-Referat
