Abstract

A cross-sectional survey on smoking habits of 330 young male amateur athletes and 336 male high school students of the same age (17-19 yrs) was carried out in a North Italy town. The sports mainly practised were soccer (56.4), basketball (23) and rugby (9.4). The prevalence of smoking was slightly different in the two groups: 23.3 of the athletes and 30.9 of the students smoked at least one cigarette a week, but no important difference was observed with regard to percentage of daily smokers: 17.3 of the athletes and 19.7 of the students smoked at least one cigarette a day. Athletes smoked on average 50.3 cigarettes/week and students 40.7. Again, no difference was found between the two groups with respect to age at first experience with smoking and age at starting regular smoking. Students seemed to be informed about the health consequences of smoking in a higher percentage than athletes mainly from mass media information. The odds ratio of being a current smoker significantly increased in the presence of best friend and girlfriend smoking in both groups, as assessed by multiple logistic regression. The odds ratio of smoking if the best friend or girlfriend smoked was 3.7 in the athletes and 8.2 in the students, and increased to 12.7 in the former and 10.3 in the latter when both best friend and girlfriend smoked. The attitude of parents towards children smoking was also significantly associated with smoking among athletes but not students. Alcohol drinking was associated with smoking in students but not athletes. Verf.-Referat
