Abstract
The three types of drugs commonly used in sports (therapeutic, performance enhancing, and recreational) are presented in this article. Specific drugs within each group, the extent of the problem as it is known, the physicians role in treating athletic drug abuse, and suggested approaches for the physician dealing with each group of drugs are presented.
