Abstract

Athletic heart syndrome is a benign condition comprised of a constellation of physiologic adaptations to the increased demands of exercise. Features include biventricular hypertrophy with normal or improved systolic and diastolic function. The alterations in cardiac structure are dependent on the type of training undertaken (dynamic versus isometric). An understanding of the clinical expression of these changes is essential to prevent misinterpretation and to allow the athletic heart syndrome to be differentiated from pathologic conditions, in particular hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Questions remain regarding the underlying mechanisms of the athletic heart syndrome and its long-term prognosis. Verf.-Referat
