Abstract

Plasma glucose, glycerol and triacylglycerols (TG) concentrations were investigated in male junior and senior kayakers before and after arm exercise performed using EK-1 kayak ergometer. The main findings of the study are summarized below: 1. Total work performed by the end of exercise was equal in junior and senior kayakers. 2. Arm exercise caused significant elevation in plasma glucose and glycerol concentration in both experimental groups. The observed increases were equal in junior and senior kayakers. 3. The behaviour of plasma TG differed significantly in junior and senior athletes. Arm exercise resulted in elevation of the mean plasma TG concentration in senior kayakers. On the contrary, no changes in the mean TG level was observed in junior athletes. However, the analysis of individual values of post exercise TG levels revealed the divergance in TG response in junior kayakers. In four from nine juniors the decrease in TG concentration was observed, in five the elevation in plasma TG was shown after the exercise. The differences in relative rates of TG synthesis and clearance are speculated as a reason of observed disparity in TG response to arm exercise. Verf.-Referat
