Abstract

To find out the relationship between exercise-induced ACTH, cortisol and growth hormone secretions, and maximum oxygen uptake as well as oxygen uptake at the anaerobic threshold, 10 young track cyclists performed graded exercise until refusal. There was a negative correlation (r = 0.966) between the ratio of ACTH levels after work to ACTH levels before work, and oxygen uptake at the anaerobic threshold (AT). There was a positive correlation (r = 0.840) between the ratio of cortisol increments to ACTH increments after work, and VO2max. Plasma levels of ACTH, cortisol and hGH after exercise were not related. We conclude that a magnitude of the release of ACTH and cortisol in performed physical exercise was closely related to AT and VO2max of the athletes. Verf.-Referat
