Abstract
Shoulder pain in the athlete can have many possible etiologies. Some of these may not be as apparent as others, thus requiring a more in-depth history, physical examination, and diagnostic battery to enlarge the differential diagnosis. We describe a 20-year-old collegiate football player whose only complaint was that of posterior shoulder pain after a particularly solid hit. This common complaint was coupled with the uncommon diagnosis of first rib fracture only after a complete examination. Although a distinct mechanism of injury can only be postulated, knowledge of the regional anatomy will aid in the diagnosis and treatment of this fracture. Verf.-Referat
