Abstract

The malonylaldehyde concentration and activities of 5-lipoxygenase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase were measured in alveolar surfactant preparations obtained from rats which were treated with an allergen to induce anaphylactic shock or subjected to physical exercise until exhaustion. Both physical exercise and allergen treatment caused significant changes in all tested variables. Malonylaldehyde concentration was significantly elevated suggesting the augmentation of peroxide formation following exercise or allergen treatment. The increases of 5-lipoxygenase activity suggested that leucotriene synthesis increased in response to both experiments. Moreover, it follows from the fall in glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activities that endoperoxide inactivation was significantly diminished in response to physical and anaphylactic stress. The results were discussed with respect to regulation of smooth muscle tone in the respiratory system following physical effort and allergen-induced bronchospasm. Verf.-Referat
