Abstract

Spinal cord injuries in athletics present inherent difficulties in decisions regarding on-the-field management, diagnosis, and subsequent return to full participation. Different spinal cord injury syndromes may be seen depending on the spinal level and the type of injury. Initial management of the patient with suspected spinal cord and/or vertebral column injury follows the rules of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, with careful attention to airway establishment and maintenance. The player must be transported with cervical spine immobilized. Careful neurological and radiographic evaluation should be conducted as necessary. Guidelines are discussed on the decision to return to competitive and contact sports. Verf.-Referat
