Abstract

Smokeless tobacco use is a world-wide practice and is considered to be one of the fastest growing health hazards in the United States. This is a timely issue particularly since our nation is currently attempting to achieve a drug-free society. Cigarette use has been on the decline; however, smokeless tobacco use is increasing particularly among adolescents and young adult males. This article describes the prevalence and use of smokeless tobacco among adolescents and young adults and identifies the potential health consequences associated with regular use. Primary and secondary prevention/intervention strategies which can be used by athletic trainers are discussed. These strategies include suggestions for educational programs, the prevention of relapse, and policies which restrict use of smokeless tobacco. Verf.-Referat
