Abstract

Moment-of-release (MOR) detections were obtained from button presses made by cricket batsmen standing behind a net placed where the batting crease would be and observing a fast bowler run up and bowl at them. First level batsmen produced uniformly low MOR detection errors (average 57 msecs) in comparison to the larger (average 122 msecs) errors of the third level batsmen. The higher level batsmen were also charcterised by MOR detection responses which were both before and after the event, whereas the responses made by batsmen at other levels were almost uniformly late. Attempts by the bowlers to increase the MOR detection error by the deliberate use of disguise techniques were not successful, but there was significant variation in the amount of error associated with individual bowlers.
