Abstract

The effect of playing surface on rate and type of injury in womens field hockey was examined. A survey was conducted over two years of the Australian National championships: 1984, when the championship was played on grass; and 1985, when Astroturf was used. Injury rates were higher on Astroturf. Injuries to the lower limb were mot commonly reported at both championships. When lower-limb injuries were categorised as involving the joints or soft tissue only, it was found that soft-tissue injuries were more frequent on Astroturf, and joint injuries on grass. It is suggested that the risk of injury may be higher on Astroturf and that coaches and players should be aware of the effects of different surfaces on playing style and thus on risk of injury.
