Abstract des Autors
Two hundred and thirty-nine students participated in a study designed to explore perceptions of the typical female, male, female athlete, and male athlete. Brovermans Short Form of the Sex-Role Questionnaire was used. The questionnaire yields means for three subscales: male-valued items, female-valued items, and socially desirable items (sex unspecified). Since many of the behaviors associated with athletic performance also fall in the domain of stereotypical masculine behaviors, it was anticipated that the female athlete would be seen as possessing more male-valued characteristics (e.g., active, aggressive, dominant) than the typical female. These stereotypical masculine behaviors have been closely associated with socially desirable characteristics in general. Surprisingly, females, males, female athletes and male athletes were viewed as having equal amounts of both socially desirable and male-valued characteristics/behaviors, perhaps reflecting a changing view of women in general. On female-valued characteristics, females were perceived as having more of these behaviors than males, male athletes, and female athletes. Male athletes and female athletes were also seen to differ on this dimension with male athletes having fewer female-valued characteristics than female athletes.
