Abstract

Based on our review of the literature, we believe that the position statement by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (1987) reflects the current level of knowledge pertaining to knee braces. The AAOS states that prophylactic knee braces have not been proven effective in reducing the number and severity of knee injuries. The statement concluded that there is no credible, longterm, scientifically conducted study that supports using knee braces on otherwise healthy players. Rehabilitative and functional knee braces were approved by the AAOS as an effective means of treating knee injuries. There remains a need for further epidemiological, biomechanical, and performance research studies with unbiased evaluations. Verf.-Referat
