Abstract
In this article, the development of physical potential of the patellofemoral joint and the extensor mechanism of the knee are discussed. An assumption will be made that careful history, physical examination, and any appropriate diagnostic tests have already been performed, and that the correct diagnosis has been made. Therapeutic exercise, both in general terms and as it specifically relates to the extensor mechanism of the knee, some biomechanics of the patellofemoral joint as they relate to rehabilitation, and finally, a specific rehabilitation program for both the nonoperative and postoperative patellofemoral joints are discussed.
