Abstract

At all major I.A.A.F. and area competitions a medical delegate is appointed to assist the Organising Committee in preparing the necessary medical arrangements for the meeting. The duties of the medical delegate are defined in I.A.A.F. rule 108 and in I.A.A.F. competition regulations issued in January 1987. The medical delegate has the ultimate authority on all medical matters. In particular, he deals with all matters relating to doping control and femininity testing, but he also helps the Organising Committee in arranging medical care in the stadium and along a marathon or race walking course. At meetings held under I.A.A.F. rule 12 paragraph 1 (A), (B) and (C), the medical delegate is the chairman of a Doping Committee which also includes a member or representative of the I.A.A.F. Medical Committee and a qualified medical officer of the organising country. At the Doping Control Center the medical delegate has the responsibility to ensure that the doping tests are conducted in accordance with the I.A.A.F. doping control regulations. He must also evaluate any medication which an athlete has reported using, prior to the competition, and must decide whether or not such an athlete should be allowed to compete. Verf.-Referat
